He was elected as the first president of Korea in 1948. He remained in power even after the Korean war, which began by North Korea's surprise attack. It is known that "Over the years his regime was seen as authoritarian, corrupt and inefficient." However, he was re-elected for president for 1956 and 1960, however this rose a anti-government demonstrations because many weren't convinced that this was a fair election. The citizens went against Syngman Rhee and a student uprising overturned Rhee's government in 1960, April. Rhee evacuated to Hawaii until his death, which was on July 19th, 1965.
He is known as a unworthy president to Korean till this day, due to the split of North and South Korea and also "his administration presided with a heavy hand over a poor and corrupt society which changed little under his watch."
